Mike was born in Helsinki, Finland, and has lived around the world, most recently in Hampton, Virginia. He is currently a student at the University of Virginia.
As a high school sophomore, Mike was hired by the Hampton Planning Department. There he was one of three Youth Planners responsible for updating and implementing the Youth Component of the Hampton Community Plan, a document that outlined the local government’s goals and strategies to improve the city for its young citizens. Mike provided staff support to the Hampton Youth Commission as well as the Planning Commission, striving to involve young people in the decisions made by local government. He has also been involved in planning and presenting at regional and national conferences focused on engaging young people in their community.
Mike volunteered in many different aspects of community service in Hampton and has been a part of two service teams to Nicaragua, where he worked with a Non-Governmental Organization to build an orphanage and a rice mill.
Mike enjoys spending time with his family in Austria, British Columbia and Pennsylvania as well as hiking and traveling. He enjoys challenges and is always interested in trying something new.
