Sidney Mandell Johnson, a native of Memphis, Tennessee, is a sophomore Business Administration major with a concentration in Supply Chain Management at Tennessee State University. He is the youngest son of Embrick M. Johnson and Julia Diane Johnson. He is a dean’s list student and a proud member of the D.R.E.A.M. program (Developing Renewing Embracing Aspiring Men). Through this program he has gained knowledge on how to effectively lead and also become a strong role model for young men. Amidst his academic involvements Sidney is actively involved in the Student Government Association, with which he is a lead figure in coordinating an Alternative Spring Break for his peers in the sophomore class scheduled for early March 2011. Sidney has been in close contact with Habitat for Humanity, with whom he, along with his peers, will be building a home for an underprivileged family. Along with being a member of the House of Delegates, he currently serves the class of 2013 as Class Representative.
Throughout his administration he has been able to effectively build a forge connection between the university, the community, and his sophomore class. As a business administration major Sidney plans to act as a liaison between small business and large corporations to find common ground on tax incentives. He would like to join his spiritual beliefs with his passion for community service. Beyond his business aspirations, Sidney is a very spiritual person. He is a faithful member of Middle Baptist Church in Memphis, TN, where he serves on the youth advisor committee. Sidney plans to develop after school programs that show inner city males positive examples of Christian men. One of Sidney’s most recent achievements has been helping to create and seeing the formation of the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP). This program targets inner city youth, and matches them with a collegiate mentor, in hopes of providing that student with a solid source of support. In addition to being a role model to the students, the mentor’s responsibility is to engage his or her mentee in a service learning project, so that the student feels empowered by the fact that they have an ability to make a difference in his or her community. Not only does Sidney serve as a devoted mentor in this program, he is instrumental in promoting the program and finding quality students to serve as mentors.
During his free time, Sidney enjoys spending time with family and friends. He is also a lifeguard for the Memphis community. In addition to lifeguarding, Sidney is a licensed swim instructor. He feels privileged to have the ability to share his gift of swimming with people who have the desire to learn the skill. Sidney is greatly appreciative of everyone that has supported him thus far and those who will continue to support him.
