For more than two decades, the National Youth Leadership Council™ (NYLC) has focused on building vital communities with young people through service-learning. As a national service-learning organization, NYLC is a leader in linking youth, educators, and communities in redefining the role of young people in society. It empowers young people to transform themselves from passive recipients of information and resources into valuable, contributing members of a democracy.

Service-learning is a teaching method that engages young people in solving problems within their schools and communities as part of their academic studies, taking the students from passive recipients to active participants in their education and community.

State Farm® Background
In 2001, State Farm first sponsored the National Service-Learning Conference Awards Luncheon. In 2003, the State Farm Companies Foundation awarded NYLC a three-year grant. The grant has funded a variety of programs and projects promoting service-learning.

The annual National Service-Learning Conference showcases the best of service-learning as more than 2,500 teachers and students come together to share best practices. Each year, the number and variety of seminars offered has grown and State Farm has been recognized as a factor in this growth. At the conference State Farm has a prominent role as:
      · "Leadership Sponsor” for the conference.
      · Sponsor of The National Service-Learning Exchange.
      · Sponsor of “Growing to Greatness,” the state of service-learning annual report.
      · Sponsor of State Farm Service-Learning Practitioner and the State Farm Youth Leadership for Service-Learning Excellence       Awards.

NYLC has helped develop service-learning projects that address business issues important to State Farm. Service-learning provides the means for students to positively impact their community as they develop projects to reduce losses from auto, fire and health issues while increasing both financial literacy and academic achievement.
