Issue: Driver Safety

Grant Amount: $58732.57
Ridgeway, OH
Year Funded: 2011
Organization: Ridgemont Schools

Car accidents are the leading cause of death among teenagers. With this statistic in mind the Ridgemont FFA planned many culminating service-learning activities to keep their peers safe on the road while driving. The first Ohio Safe Driving Summit will be hosted in conjunction with their state wide partners to build a safe driving network with 25 schools from across the state.

We will work closely with The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Hardin County Sheriff’s Department, Hardin County Health Department, Ohio Northern University, The Ohio State University Hardin County Extension Service, Mac-A-Chee Farm Safety 4 Just Kids Chapter, Ohio Department of Transportation and our English, science, math, technology and health teachers to build a comprehensive service-learning safe driving program to save lives.

Project Updates

Safe Driving Gym Take-Over

Our safe driving program took over the gym on December 1st.   We had 7 different stations that the students were able to walk around to and interact with.  One of the stations included a driving simulator that our local Nationwide representative brought to us.  The students enjoyed being able to having free roam and go to any station that they wanted.  One of the stations was a survey that the students took and the response was positive.  The students have enjoyed the first two months of our campaign and look forward to the coming months.

Obstacle Course with Impaired Vision Goggles

During gym classes on November 18th, we had students drive a golf cart while wearing the impaired vision goggles.  This was just a neat simulation that the students could do to fully grasp the implications of driving drunk.  Many students failed miserably at the obstacle course, but that was the point that we were trying to convey.  The response to this activity was fully positive and the students can not wait for another event that they are able to participate in.  Partners in this event were the Hardin County Sheriffs Office and State Farm.

Statewide Safe Drivng Summit

1 Chance,  1Choice, 1 Life Safe Driving Campaign

On March 21st and 22nd, we held our first annual Statewide Safe Driving Summit.  Twelve schools came and participated in the summit.  They left with many new ideas that the schools are going to use to implement a safe driving program into their schools. We held the summit at a local university and stayed the night in their new, fabulous hotel.  We showed the schools how to incorporate service-learning into their safe driving programs.  The summit was fun and many new ideas were passed around.

Forever 18 Prom Event

1 Chance,  1Choice, 1 Life Safe Driving Campaign

On the day before prom, we held our first Forever 18 prom event.  Students walked through the gym as if they were getting ready for prom night.  The students first walked through a “getting ready” part.  They picked up their friends at 8:00 and were off to prom.  As they kept walking, they took a turn and were suddenly at an after prom party.  The scene was littered with different cups and food.  The students were said to be “drinking”.  The next thing that students arrived at was four car sets.  They sat in these seats and watched a video about kids who drank and drove on prom night.  The video was very real life and showed the dangers of drinking and driving.  The students got up after the video and continued to a car wreck scene.  Car parts littered the road way and a cop light was on the scene.  The students then came to a casket with a mirror inside.  A sign to the left simply read “Please Return on Monday”.  An assembly was held later on in the day.  A speaker form M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) spoke about how her father was killed by a drunk driver when she was only 5 years old.  The message hit many students very hard.  It was a very touching assembly and many students left with a greater sense of the dangers of drinking and driving.  A sign in front of the school was posted for everyone to pledge to “Return on Monday”.
