Mission Ignition is a service-learning program that encompasses driver safety in three areas: Ignite the Students, Fuel the Educators, and Spark Community Engagement. The student-led, researched-based project will provide real-world connections as students plan, implement and evaluate each endeavor.
A comprehensive project is being planned to incorporate driver safety into K-12 curriculum. Reading and writing will be core components meeting English standards. Physics, art, agriculture, fashions, law education and others will implement components of this service project. Outreach to other schools is also a vital part of the campaign.
DRIVER SAFETY-Increase practice of seatbelt usage. Increase awareness of situations that can impact drivers including the various aspects of distracted driving and driving impaired.
LEGISLATION-Increase statewide awareness of Indiana’s new texting and driving law. Continue to stay abreast of upcoming legislation.
PEER-TO-PEER EDUCATION-Increase number of teens practicing safe driving habits. Increase number of teen driver safety campaigns.
COLLABORATION-Work with other campaigns striving to reduce the number of unnecessary accidents and teen deaths related to driving.
LINKING TO CURRICULUM-Increase opportunities for K-12 classes to be involved in project.
Project Updates
Student Council Retreat (8/26/11)
A core group of Mission Ignition members went to an elementary Student Council retreat. We presented on safety issues that related to elementary students. This was a pilot program before developing K-6 mini units for our four elementary schools.
Check Awarding Ceremony (9/21/11)
At the check awarding ceremony, all Mission Ignition members danced to the PI Slide. During the presentation, members told the student body about Mission Ignition's history and goals. After the convocation, students were invited to learn the PI Slide at lunch and to pick up a popsicle.
This was a great way to promote Project Ignition and the State Farm Youth Advisory Board.
National Teen Driver Safety Week (10/17/11 to 10/21/11)
Each day we planned activities for National Teen Driver Safety Week (NTDSW). From announcements to displays on our school marquees, we promoted safe driving. At lunch we had multiple activites to engage the student body.
To start the week off, we set up an obstacle course with the Fatal Vision googles, had a t-shirt giveaway, set up our pledge table, played a sign game with information from the Indiana's Driving Manual, and chalked the sidewalk with safe driving messages.
The fun activites continued on Tuesday. The pledge table continued, a basketball game with the Fatal Vision goggles was set up, a driving game similar to Monopoly was played, we took video pledges of people pledging to drive safe.
Wednesday's festivities consisted of a sign memory game, driving bingo, the pledge table and another t-shirt giveaway.
Thursday we sold Mission Ignition cupcakes, played a sign obstacle course game, and other games that we made to help students pass their driver's test.
The final day, Friday, we played the more games related to the driver's manual and had the pledge table set up again.
NTDSW Posters
To promote National Teen Driver Safety Week, members created fun, quality signs to display around the school. These posters got many compliments, and will be reused next year.
Driver's Manual Games
To reinforce information from the Indiana's Driving Manual, students created driving games. Some were board games reminiscence of classic favorites while others were innovative and original.
Alliance Outreach (10/27/11)
At the end of October, Mission Ignition traveled to another high school in Indiana that had expressed interest in starting a safe driving campaign. We brought along two seniors and three sophomores, although the sophomores had no speaking roles. Their presence was more a learning experience, so that one day they will be prepared to be the presenters.
Youth Outreach (11/14/11 to 12/9/11)
Mission Ignition is proud to say that we have reached out to all the students K-6 in our school corporation. We traveled to our four elementary schools and presented on topics that related to the age level. All students were then able to participate in activities that related to their topics.
Overall, a few key activities really worked. The preschool and kindergarten group loved the tricycle races that stressed the importance of wearing a helmet. The first and second graders enjoyed making pledge chains encouraging them to be safe while on the bus. Third and fourth graders enjoyed a quick click challenge that reinforced seatbelt usage. Fifth and sixth graders made a safety quilt in which they each used fabric markers to express their intent to be a safe passenger while in the car. After going to the initial elementary, the projects were refined to best accommodate students’ learning.
Holiday Activities (12/5/2011 to 12/16/2011)
For the holiday season Mission Ignition assembled a safe driving holiday tree decorated with pledges and safe driving messages. The tree was displayed in the cafeteria for everyone to see and learn something from. Also, a group of students performed a cover of the classic, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. The song entitled, "Randall the High School Student" was sung over the announcements at the end of the day.
More Alliance Outreach (1/24/12) and (2/7/12)
Keeping in line with our goal of reaching as many surrounding schools as possible, Mission Ignition presented at two more high schools to promote our message. This has helped us develop what we hope to be a fun and interactive presentation that can be used just about anywhere.
As a followup, we created and mailed kits for our alliances with materials to start their own campaign.
Activity Week (2/13/12 - 2/17/12)
After the success of National Teen Driver Safety Week, we hosted another activity week during the week of Valentine's Day. During that week our school also had a presentation about domestic abuse, so we collaborated with that group to promote safe driving and domestic abuse awareness.
FCCLA State Leadership Convention (3/2/12)
In hopes of creating more alliance schools, members presented at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America State Convention. The audience included 150 teenage students who were involved in their school's FCCLA chapter. The event was a success, with thirteen schools expressing interest in starting their own campaign.
Balloon Pledge Launch (3/5/12)
As a experiment, Mission Ignition members wrote a message about why they drive safe on a card attached to a balloon. We launched the balloons in hope that at least one would be found. One person who was cleaning up a field after a tornado stuck 100 south of our school found the balloon and emailed us. This was an experiement to see if the idea would actually work. We will hold a larger launch at the end of the school year with our senior class.
Car Clinic (3/15/12)
Our school hosted a car clinic for the school and community. Students signed up for check ups in which a mechanic checked fluids in the cars, and students checked tire pressure, lights, and washed windows. The mechanic then made reccomendations to the car owner. This was a huge success and a great learning experience for many on our team. We already have an auto repair shop who has pledged to be our partner for next year.
National Service Learning Conference (4/11/12 - 4/14/12)
A group of eight Mission Ignition members, two from each grade, traveled to Minneaplis, Minnesota to attend the 23rd annual National Service Learning Conference. The experience was eye opening for most members as they realized all of the possibilities in the world of service. Mission Ignition had a booth in the exhibit hall and had a wonderful time meeting all the other Project Ignition schools. It was great to be able to catch up with the other National Leader schools. The conference also brought the debut of Mr. Ignition, Mission Ignition's very own superhero. We hope to use Mr. Ignition as our mascot in the coming years for our Mission Ignition campaign.
