The Renton/Skyway Boys & Girls Club is working to combat generational poverty, primarily through MicroSociety, a research proven, innovative program where kids create a microcosm of the real world in an after-school setting.  Club members founded the City of Renway within the Club, created an elected government, hold weekly town hall meetings, created a youth court to oversee justice, pass laws through consensus, and create youth ventures and agencies that allow kids to turn their passions into viable businesses using Club currency.

The MicroSociety program promotes economic self-sufficiency through education and training of youth and their families.  Our program model combats generational poverty by giving kids a real world way to learn how to handle money and plan a business.  MicroSociety provides a safe environment for kids to develop entrepreneurial assets—a subset of developmental assets, which are building blocks of positive youth development.  These positive experiences and qualities help youth grow up to become caring, responsible adults. We also teach families the financial skills they need to succeed through Family Night programs that incorporate financial literacy training and college preparation and savings.

Project Updates

The City of Renway says "THANK YOU" to State Farm and the YAB!

Thanks to the State Farm YAB, the City of Renway is off to a great start!  We kicked off our year with our first Harvest Marketplace on October 26, complete with a check presentation from State Farm!  The kids and Marketplace shoppers LOVED the big check and it is proudly displayed in the Club.

Read more about Renway, and see the video we created for the State Farm YAB application on our website:

DECEMBER 2011 - The City of Renway celebrates its 2nd Marketplace event of the year!

Tis the season for entrepreneurship! The members of Renway showed off their business acumen with a special Holiday Marketplace featuring homemade dinner, hand-crafted ornaments and tattoos (fake of course!) and drawn portraits. What better way to remember what the holidays are about than celebrating how our youth rise above their challenges!

JANUARY 2012 - Meet Renway's New Interns!

Renway MicroSociety

With the help of State Farm, we were able to hire three Junior Staff Interns.  We have been able to grant these local youth with an incomparable experience.  These teens are able to grow their communication skills, whilst learning about the responsibilities of being an employee.  Here is a description of and a message from each:

Austin M. - State Farm Technology Intern
The SF Technology Intern will be assisting the Financial Center and Media Center within getting all paperwork and/or bookkeepping transported online.  The Financial Center will need to create personal and business documents and systems for every member, venture and agency within the city of Renway.  The intern will also be responsible for handling all the multimedia, such as Club videos, web updates and photography.  It is required that each member understands and are a part of the creation of these documents.

Through this job opportunity, I am able to continue to explore my love for technology and digital media.  I am able to do the things that I love to do in an environment where there is a real-world application for it.  I know that I am blessed with this opportunity; very few are able to work jobs early on that they actually enjoy doing.  Plus the fact that I am able to share my passion with the younger members at the club.  There’s nothing else like it.
-Austin M., 17

Ericka R. - State Farm Leadership Intern
The SF Leadership Intern will be working directly with Government and Managers for check points for the next Marketplace and Bookkeeping within their venture.  They will work closely with Government to insure that all taxes and fees are being collected and reported correctly.  The intern will mentor the elected officials on their leadership within MicroSociety and their civic engagement outside of the Club.

Hi my name is Ericka and I am glad that I received the State Farm Youth Advisory Board internship to work at the Renton/Skyway Boys & Girls Club because I get to return to a place where I grew up, a place with numerous memories and many more to come thanks to you State Farm YAB. While in the internship I will use the leadership skills I have gained over the past couple of years, to give back to the organization that gave so much to me. I look forward to mentoring the youth at this club in micro because it was just getting started when I left. And upon my return micro society has blossomed into a program that will forever touch the lives of the youth that are a part of it. From this experience I will also grow, as a mentor and as a leader. So, thank you State Farm Youth Advisory Board for this opportunity.
-Ericka R., 17

Christina R. - State Farm Entrepreneur Intern
The SF Entrepreneur Intern will work with members who would like to start their own venture as an Entrepreneur.  In addition, the intern will provide support to the existing ventures and agencies.  They will be responsible for working with members of all ages on business proposals and loan applications and following up with those businesses to make sure the business is going to be successful.

Through this opportunity I get to help younger members of the club learn the process of running their own business. I enjoy doing this because i can help them take-in what it would be like when they grow up and maybe start their own business. Having an Accounting class and Business class also helps me understand more and share what I have learned to help out others. I am thankful for this opportunity, because I am helping someone else and giving them an opportunity that I did not have when I was a member of The Boys & Girls Club before they had MicroSociety.

-Christina R., 17

FEBRUARY 2012 - Looking Back

This past month has been full of events at Renway!

February 8th - The Valentine's Day Marketplace

The Valentine's Day Marketplace is always one of the year's busiest for us.  Being an external marketplace with such a definitive theme, adults and youth from the community have an idea of what to expect.  The ventures made tons of creative V Day products.

February 9th - Youth of the Year Luncheon

Hosted at the prestigious Benaroya Hall, the Youth of the Year Luncheon is always something that Club staff look forward to.  This year, Austin McHenry (one our State Farm Interns!) was chosen as Renway's Youth of the Year.  Although he did not win for the county, the speech he delivered was one that will be remembered.

Video coming soon!

February 18th -  Renway Work Party

Ahh another work party... Work parties have always been a big deal at Renway.  Our community parties have played an incalculable role in helping this Club.  We were able to hang flags, paint walls, and post our check from State Farm!

February 24th - Renway "Pajama Jam"

Due to the school schedule, our kids were at the Club basically all week, so we threw them a party!  Hosted by Austin McHenry, our own State Farm Intern/DJ!  Everyone was dressed up in their pajamas and everyone had a great time!

February 25th - 1st Annual Bowl-A-Thon

This year, we hosted our very first Annual Renway Bowl-A-Thon!  Community partners sponsored lanes and put together teams to bowl.  The Seattle SeaHawks' own Roy Lewis had a great team!  The numbers are still being crunched, but it looks like the fundraiser was a great success.
