Milwaukee, recently named a United Nations Global Compact City, is located at the heart of freshwater issues and a quickly developing water industry. However, most youth who reside in the metro Milwaukee area are completely unaware of their hometown’s new claim to fame much less the environmental issues and water industry career opportunities knocking right at their own back door.  Our project seeks to innovatively increase youth awareness of freshwater issues, solutions, and educational/career opportunities by engaging them in service learning projects, using a local youth leadership development program, called Lead to Succeed, that the youth will then use as content for the Milwaukee Water Council’s Water Education website to be marketed to approximately 250,000 K-12 youth in southeastern Wisconsin.

Freshwater issues are one of the key environmental concerns that future generations will face in upcoming years. Milwaukee, being located on the largest body of freshwater lakes, will play a significant role in the maintenance of this vital resource. Our program seeks to use service learning to educate youth in multiple aspects of the water industry including issues, solutions, and future opportunities. Through these experiences, they will learn environmental responsibility, and spread this to their peers in the community. We have created a ‘Water 101’ Curriculum Resource Guide, which includes multiple topics. Potential guest speakers, resource location, and potential field trips accompany each topic

Project Updates

November

‘You Are Here’ Creating a web-based, online map to guide youth in learning about and engaging in the

The “You Are Here” Water Website project is off to a great start!  Here are a few of our November highlights:

I.  Lead to Succeed Kickoff Conference

Over 80 student participants in the “You Are Here” Water Website project attended a Kickoff Conference on Nov. 4, 2011.  Hosted by the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, the conference was a fun way for students from each of the five program sites to meet one another, get acquainted with water industry professionals, and get fired up about the issues their project will be addressing.  The students loved the interactive activities, the dynamic lineup of speakers, and the poignant breakout workshops.  All in all, the conference was a perfect kickoff for this year's project work!

II.  College Project Managers

Service learning students from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee began working with the high-school students at each of the five “You Are Here” project sites.   Through their role as College Project Managers, the UWM students will lead and mentor the high-school students during each step of the project process.  The relationships these students are starting to build have already elicited meaningful reactions.  One of the College Project Managers summed it up eloquently in a recent blog post:

"In two weeks of going to St. Joan Antida I already can tell that my role as a Lead to Succeed Project Manager will be significant for me as well as for the girls. Not only will I learn a lot from the girls, I know that they have already learned a lot from me!

- Elizabeth M, St. Joan Antida Youth Water Website Project Site

All of the College Project Managers share project updates and record thoughts about their experiences biweekly on the Lead to Succeed, Milwaukee Blog.

III.  Research

Guided by their College Project Managers and assisted by guest speakers, students at each of the five program sites are busy researching local and global freshwater issues.  Elizabeth Thelen from the Water Council visited each site to share information about the Water Council and the network of other stakeholders invested in the Water Website project.  The students are becoming even more passionate about what they can accomplish with the website they're going to build.

A few quotes from the students’ research so far:

“The United Nations has named Milwaukee to be one of 13 Fresh Water Global Compact Cities. This means our entire nation, as well as the entire world, is looking to our community to be a leader in water technology, innovation, conservation, and education." – School of Urban Planning and Architecture project site

"We want to build excitement about water in people from "K to grey" to teach and empower the following generations about the importance of water in our society.” – Professional Learning Institute project site

There is an abundance of industries that directly came to and are running in Milwaukee because of fresh water. Maintaining water purity can help secure the businesses in Milwaukee as a staple of the community." – Professional Learning Institute project site

I care about this issue for my health and how my future will be, and because of my children’s future. Also, because I want to help my community.” – St. Joan Antida project site

IV.  A Big “Thank You” to State Farm

Nine student representatives from four “You Are Here” Water Website project sites attended the State Farm Youth Advisory Board check presentation event on November 16th.  Professional Learning Institute student Jonah Duncan spoke on behalf of all the students involved in the project,  saying “THANK YOU” to the Board for the opportunity to do this project.

December

Hand in hand with the professionals at Discovery World, our students are hard at work in creating a youth oriented "Water Website."  As part of the partnership,  students attended an event called "Building the Water Generartion" at Discovery World on December 13, 2011.

Fox 6 did a feature on the event.

January

‘You Are Here’ Creating a web-based, online map to guide youth in learning about and engaging in the

Students in the Water Website project spent the month of January participating in a series of College and Career Planning workshops.  Designed to help students connect their service-learning experience to in-demand careers in the Water Industry, these interactive sessions gave students the opportunity to hear directly from local HR professionals on the subjects of Post-Secondary Pathways, Career Exploration, Resume Writing, and Interview Skills.

Check out what the students have to say about their experiences in these workshops:

"The presentations that have happened so far have really helped me determine my path in life."  - Santedra

"I didn't know how to arrange a resume and what was all supposed to be on it, but now it will be easy for me to make one."  - Rajah

"Thank you for helping me learn how to fill out applications, resumes, and how to apply to colleges and where to go!" - Seina

"Because of poeple coming in and talking to us, I know about how to get back in my right path for success by filling out the FAFSA!"  Jasmin

February

‘You Are Here’ Creating a web-based, online map to guide youth in learning about and engaging in the

February was the month of field trips for the Water Website: You Are Here teams.  Students visited Veolia Water Milwaukee to learn about wastewater treatment systems.  They also visited Karthauser and Sons, Inc, a wholesale florist, to get a firsthand glimpse of the company’s innovative water recycling and steam heat technology.  Next up, students are going to visit Sweet Water Organics to learn about aquaponics and urban agriculture. These field trip experiences are designed to expose student teams to the multifaceted water industry in Milwaukee.  Not only are the students building their own water knowledge, they’re taking photos and doing on-camera interviews with water industry professionals  –  a body of content that students plan to feature on their You Are Here Water Website!

The You Are Here teams are hard at work gathering content for their Water Website, which is scheduled to be launched in May.  They are out in the community planting rain gardens, water testing, conducting interviews with water professionals, and visiting innovative water stewardship organizations like Sweetwater Organics.  These images showcase a small sample of the students’ work throughout the month of March.  As always, you can check out more frequent updates from our volunteer College Project Managers on our Lead to Succeed blog.  http://ltsmilwaukee.blogspot.com/
