Camp Fire USA Central - Puget Sound Council Disaster Preparedness Pacific Northwest Zone (Choose different project.)The City of Seattle has been negatively impacted a number of times in the past by severe wind storms that have caused massive power outages. Of greater significance, we are sitting on a major earthquake fault that could result in a massive disaster that would essentially wipe out our infrastructure. Experts warn citizens to prepare to be without any services whatsoever for a minimum of three days. Yet many low-income and limited English speaking residents are not aware of simple measures that could better prepare their family to withstand the worst effects of a major natural disaster and could even save their lives.
The Camp Fire USA Learn and Serve project is a natural extension of our mission to build caring, confident youth and future leaders. All Camp Fire activities promote the development of leadership skills in youth, by actively engaging them in the selection, planning, and implementation of projects. The Latino youth involved in this project are specifically interested in learning more about their own community’s state of preparedness in the case of a natural disaster.
Using the Camp Fire USA “Prepare Today – Lead Tomorrow” disaster preparedness curriculum, and in partnership with the American Red Cross, youth will receive extensive training on what is needed for a community to be adequately prepared for a natural disaster. Armed with that information, teens will do an assessment of their community, starting with their own families, to determine what emergency and community preparedness resources their community has and needs.
