'Move It!' Natural and Societal Disaster Preparedness Great Western Zone (Choose different project.)Move It!' has three parts. The Ambassador Phase spends four months working with 30 youth from two schools to research, design, and implement plans to address the obstacles they personally face in increasing their amount of physical activity and exercise. Incorporating change into their daily lives will be reinforced by the involvement in a bike repair and bicycle riding club. Their challenge will be to increase their fitness levels sufficient to participate and complete a 2 mile and a 5k race. Their fitness progress as well as success and challenges in implementing their personal fitness plans will be measured on an on-going basis.
The 2009-2010 school year will end with a celebration that highlights their accomplishments and kicks off the second part of 'Move It!' The Neighborhood Phase will begin in June 2010 and will focus on the Ambassadors maintaining their success and encouraging their family and friends to engage in sustainable active lifestyles. Both schools will identify a local neighborhood need or obstacle that they can address that will promote physical activity and exercise and address that need. An example of a project is the planting of 5 trees and a bench along popular greenways that meander throughout Longmont, creating much needed shade and a resting point for individuals who need a break along the way. The bicycle riding club will continue during the summer with evening Family Bike Nights, making bicycle repair supplies available for neighborhood use. The Ambassadors will continue with their personal fitness plans and participate in two summer races.
The Outreach Phase will commence with the onset of the 2010-2011 school year. The Ambassadors will outreach into their schools and the larger community by sharing their challenges and successes with other middle school students via classroom talks and speaking at school assemblies. Two special events, the Longmont Walking Challenge 2010 in September and the Longmont Turkey Trot in November, will be challenges around which the Ambassadors will rally their peers and community to participate. Throughout the winter, Ambassadors will continue to create and implement plans that continue their hard-won fitness goals. In January 2011, the students and families will celebrate the successes of the year and plan for the next year's service-learning experience
