Heart of Texas Service Learning - TEEN Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) [HOT Service Learni Natural and Societal Disaster Preparedness Texas Zone (Choose different project.)A TEEN-CERT Advisory Team, composed of school personnel, community members from each of the 10 districts and 2 student representatives from each of the districts, has met with the intent of recruiting volunteers from the school and the community to build a comprehensive emergency response training program for each community while incorporating the Eight Principles of Effective Practice for K-12 Service-Learning.
The 10 rural communities in the project lack organized emergency services with trained responders. The primary focus of the service-learning activities is to assist the communities in the project, with disaster preparation, mitigation, response, and recovery through a three-part project:
(1) An Information Component, which provides pamphlets containing information about the four stages of disaster (mitigation, preparation, response and recovery) to residents, flyers promoting the services of TEEN-CERT, a video on disaster readiness for seniors.
(2) An emergency CERT Kit, which included essential emergency supplies will be available to each participants - schools and adult volunteers.
(3) Interactive training to assist citizens within the community until law enforcement, fire, or emergency medical response can be obtained.
Working with local first responders and emergency management officials, TEEN-CERT members will maintain and develop their skills by participating in drills, exercises and other monthly training opportunities. Each of the 10 communities will form a Community Planning Group in their own community composed of stakeholders such as school personnel, community members, students, representatives from the county sheriff's office, churches, and local EMT members. The purpose of this group will be to recruit students as well as adults in the community to take part in a review of the existing emergency response plans in each community and integrate service-learning curricula into the core subject areas such as English language arts, math, science and social studies.
