Blackfoot/Bingham County Youth Coalition Disaster Preparedness Pacific Northwest Zone (Choose different project.)Currently this project is in the research phase. School surveys were developed by the youth and facility took one set of surveys and students another.
Meetings have been held with school administrator for the two school which have completed surveys, the youth have discussed the surveys and received input from the school in relation to the overall program development that will go into place August 2009.
Currently we are moving forward with our youth leadership summer camps with one in June, one in July and one in August to finish the program development phase. Each one of these weeks we will have 30 students.
Blackfoot is currently working on building additional partnerships with businesses that sell travel trailers to get some loaners to take and use for additional housing. Many of them are willing to rent these at about 30% of retail price.
Suicide is becoming a hot topic in this part of Idaho. Attempts and completions have gone up across the boards for all ages, wondering how much as to do with the current economy and mass layoffs in our area. We are working to identify a solid peer to peer program designed around intervention and prevention. They would rather talk to someone local through a program than someone on a state or national level as far as hotlines, and there have been have several cases currently where youth have failed to response to phone calls to their cell phones by family, friends and adults concerned for their safety, but responded through text messaging.
It re-enforces the concept that we need to become familiar and utilize today’s technology not continue with all the standard national phone hotlines, which is not the preferred method of communication among today’s youth.
